Sharing Our Years of Experience With You

Hazardous Visual Obstructions

8/29/2014

Are you aware that each year, hundreds and thousands of people suffer from road traffic accidents and injuries due to Hazardous Visual Obstructions (HVO)? According to latest data, approximately 3 cases of road traffic collisions are reported in United States every 2 minutes.

As a driver what is the single most important strategy that could decrease your risk of falling a victim to motor vehicle accidents or injuries?

  • Driving sober is definitely one
  • Not using cell-phone or other distractions while you are diving also helps significantly
  • Likewise, following traffic rules and speed recommendations (absolutely and religiously) may also reduce your risk tremendously.

There is a huge list of helpful tips but the first and perhaps the most important one is; having perfect vision and clear visibility.

How obscure visibility may increase your risk of road traffic accidents?

Often time, large fences, trees, walls or landscape may hinder your view and leads to Hazardous Visual Obstructions (HVOs) that may significantly increase the risk of accidents. According to the Federal guidelines, every public property owner must ensure a “clear line of sight” to avoid collision while entering or exiting the driveway. With a few variations, this line of sight is defined as a HVO triangle (usually 5’ x 5’ in dimensions). Several factors such as lot configuration, shape, size and location may exactly determine the obstruction hazards.

We examined one such property to rectify the concerns of an owner about the liability issues due to possible obstruction hazards.  However, complete analysis and evaluation suggested that the entrance/exit driveway was proper and in accordance with the state’s department of transportation and municipal standards for driveway entrances, with no adverse maintenance issues identified.

It is always helpful to make sure that your property offer clear line of sight in order to prevent the risk of catastrophes, legal issues and other complications. This could be done by complying with the recommendations set by Federal government and the department of transportation of your respective state.
